After five wonderful years of being the eagle's nest of choice for nature photographers from all over Ohio and the region, the Sandusky Eagles nest by Gerold's Old Dutch Tavern "fell down" on June 1, 2009.

The adults survived but sadly, the 7 week old eaglet was killed as a result. I throughly loved photographing the adults and watching the eaglet grow week by week....This gallery pays tribute to this eagle family. Hopefully they will rebuild the nest in the same spot or very close by.

Please enjoy them as much as I did..

Update: A few months later, the eagle pair built a new nest about 0.7 miles from the old nest. They had a successful clutch and two healthy eaglets in the Spring of 2010. See image 71.

Mark,
I made it up to the Dutch Tavern nest only One time, Bird Photography was still pretty new to me but this experience helped to draw me in. I came to know about it from a guy i Ran into down at Beaver Marsh. He said it's a must see.
I am certainly glad I had the one Opportunity to make it up there, I recall the Eaglet stretching and will never forget the male and female adults posted next to each other on a single branch with the sun setting on there breasts, there's no question they were a close couple watching the sunset together thinking to themselves life is good.

A special experience and one I will never forget.!!!

I never made it to the Dutch Tavern eagle nest but through your images and touching video I am able to understand what a special place this must have been and why you've become such an avid eagle photographer. Thank you for sharing the experience!

What a pleasure it has been for me, these past 3 years, watching the Eagles here in Sandusky. Besides watching these beautiful creatures, it has afforded me an opportunity to meet some of the nicest people you could ever meet, and at the same time learn more about my camera and photography at the same time. I have met people here from all over the midwest, who all share this passion. I would like to say Thank you to everyone who has helped me , and to Mark and his group for their friendship and help as well. What a nice group of people. If you haven't met Mark, and his following, you should!!! You will be the better for it!

THANK YOU FOR THESE MORE THAN WONDERFUL PICTURES. MY FRIEND AND I HAD BEEN DOWN TO THE OLD DUTCH MANY TIMES THIS YEAR. FOR BOTH OF US IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME SEEING EAGLES IN THE "WILD". WE HAD EVEN HAD A NAME FOR THE BABY EAGLETTE-"CHICKLETTE". ALTHOUGH THIS HAD THE SADDEST OF ENDINGS WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THIS TRIBUTE THAT REMEMBERS THE WONDERFUL TIMES WE HAD WITH THE EAGLES AND EAGLETTE OF THE OLD DUTCH.

This is a sad day for nature enthusiasts, photographers, the eagles, and the owners and patrons of the Old Dutch Tavern. Thanks for documenting these eagles over the years, Mark.
